Skincare with a lighter impact.

Beautiful skin and a beautiful planet: here's how you can have a zero waste beauty routine (wherever you might be).

Made from seaweed

Made from a seaweed called carrageenan (pronounced "ka-ru-guee-nan"), our drops are made from a material that is natural, biodegradable, and a carbon sink (just like trees).

Biodegradable

Drops are completely biodegradable (independent tests have been carried out in accordance OECD biodegradability standards). They even dissolve in boiling water.

Refillable

Run out of cute, sustainable skincare drops? Top up from fully compostable refill bags. Help eliminate the millions of unnecessary packaging waste produced every year.

How does our sustainable packaging work?

More about sustainable seaweed...

Where does carrageenan come from?

Most of the carrageenan used in commercial products comes from farmed seaweed, not seaweed found in the wild.

Farmers tie seaweed "cuttings" or "seeds" to lines and the seaweed grows around the line. It can then be harvested, dried (normally by the sun), and then sold to be processed into carrageenan.

What's so sustainable about seaweed?

It's one of the world’s most sustainable crops: it grows quickly and requires no fresh water, land, or fertilisers.

Even better, seaweed helps combat climate change. Just like trees, it sucks up CO2 through the process of photosynthesis, acting as a carbon offset. It also reduces the acidification and deoxygenation of the ocean, helping to fight the impacts of global warming on our seas.

Where does it come from?

Most seaweed farming is carried out by small scale farmers in countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Tanzania. Seaweed farming doesn't have high capital or technological requirements so can provide a livelihood for coastal communities who have few other employment options.

It's also an industry where women contribute. In the Philippines 44% of seaweed farmers are women, and in other countries, women help tying the seeds and with harvesting.

What else is in our drops?

Carrageenan is combined with other plant or synthetic ingredients; we never use anything animal-derived (e.g. gelatin) as we are a fully vegan brand. So they look their best (and so we can tell which product is inside), we use cosmetic grade dyes to give them their colour.

What do they feel like?

Small but strong; they feel firm and plump, a bit like a blueberry. They are robust enough to carry around your skincare but will biodegrade when you're finished with them. Either dissolve them in boiling water or add them to your compost bin and they'll disappear.

How to dispose of your drops...

Option 1

Dissolve in boiling water.

Wait a couple of minutes... and "poof" they'll disappear. Just like magic.

Short on time?
Hoard your empty drops for a week or so, add them to a cup of boiling water, and leave overnight. The next morning they'll have dissolved and you can pour the water away down the sink.

Option 2

Chuck 'em in your compost bin.
That's it.

In the right conditions, they will biodegrade by 70% in just 12 days (based on internationally recognised biodegradability tests).

Don't you think that's better than waiting hundreds of years for plastic packaging to break down?

This is cool

Water your plants.

Beauty's about to get a bit greener.

Our drops are made from a seaweed called carrageenan which is a great plant fertiliser.

After dissolving your drops, let the water cool down, then pour it on your plants and watch them flourish!

Bolt Beauty - Eco friendly skincare - zero waste skincare

Zero waste, with zero hassle...

Refillable packaging = no more waste.

Normally, when we buy beauty products, they come in packaging which we keep and use until the product runs out. When we're finished, we chuck out the packaging (or at best, recycle it).

How is circular packaging different?

Home Jars and Stackables are designed to be used for life. When you run out of drops, get more in fully compostable bags. Just tip the drops into your "old" Home Jar and you're sorted. No more packaging waste needed, ever again. Ever.

No excessive outer packaging.

Forget the box protector, fancy box, cellophane wrap, presentation box, and plastic postage sleeve. We don't see why you need all this... it just gets thrown out.

Your Bolt Beauty products will be lovingly wrapped in (recyclable) tissue paper and sent to you in a (recyclable) postage box. That's it. All the boxes and paper are sourced from FSC certified forests (which means they comes from sustainable sources). We still think its cute enough for an Instagram pic :)
